Vancouver 5, Everett 2

TALKING POINTS

Two-for-one is a bad tradeoff in hockey. Twice Vancoucer scored two goals in a minute or less. Everett fought back from the quick two-goal deficit once, but couldn’t fight back a second time.

Even though it was their fourth straight loss, the Tips deserve a little credit tonight as they played hard, harder than in the three previous losses. Something about Vancouver seems to bring out the nasty in the Tips. But the Giants are a tough team to deal with, especially when you’re missing two regular defensemen.

As a side note, Everett goaltender Leland Irving has some new pads he’s been using in practice, but he was back in his old pads tonight for the game. I guess the new ones still have some breaking in to do.

TURNING POINT

After Everett fought back from the first two-goal deficit to tie it, the Giants scored twice in a 1:07 span early in the third period. That was too much for the Tips to overcome.

HIT OF THE DAY

Any time Everett and Vancouver play there’s never any shortage of big hits, and this season the Tips have dished more than their share for a change. There were any number to choose from, but one would have a difficult time finding a better hit than the shoulder Everett’s Dane Crowley laid on Lance Bouma in the third period as Bouma skated up the ice under pressure from another Everett player.

THREE STARS

First star: Michal Repik, Vancouver. Scored the game winner.

Second star: Casey Pierro-Zabotel, Vancouver. Two assists and had to knock off the puck.

Third star: Jonathan Harty, Everett. A goal, an assist and several of those big hits.

The Herald’s honorable mention: The rest of the Giants. Really, Repik and Pierro-Zabotel were no better than any of the other Giants. This was a true team effort 1-20.

LINEUP NOTES

Everett had its three long-term casualties in the stands. Center Vitaly Karamnov (shoulder) and defensemen Taylor Ellington (foot) and Mike Alexander (shoulder) are all expected to be sidelined at least another week. With both Ellington and Alexander out the Tips are really juggling their defensive pairings, changing constantly throughout the game. Left wing Tyler Eskesen was the lone healthy scratch.

Vancouver is completely healthy, meaning forwards Mitch Czibere and Craig Cunningham and defenseman Stefan Schneider were the players left out tonight. Repik was playing in his third game since returning from the concussion suffered when hit by Crowley on Dec. 1.
