Vikings overcome conditions to beat M-P

MARYSVILLE – It wasn’t ideal weather for golf, but the Lake Stevens girls team went out and got the win anyway.

In the Wesco North opener for both teams, Lake Stevens defeated Marysville-Pilchuck 73-62 at Battle Creek Golf Course.

“It was cold,” Lake Stevens head coach Larry Palmer said of the weather.

In the nine-hole, par-36 meet, M-P’s Sara Rott finished first with a Stableford score of 18, and earned medalist honors.

Sophomore Lauren Lobaugh led the Vikings with a score of 17, followed closely by Kelly Healey, who shot a 15. They led a pack of five Lake Stevens golfers that were separated by four points.

“It was a good first match,” Palmer said, also calling the match against the Tomahawks “even.”

South Whidbey 53, Lakewood 45: At Stanwood, South Whidbey’s Whitney Wood scored 19 Stableford points to earn medalist honors and lead the Falcons to a win in the Cascade Conference meet.

Oak Harbor 4, Arlington 2: At Oak Harbor, Oak Harbor’s Christina Neilon defeated Missy Vienhage 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, helping the Wildcats to the Wesco North victory. The No. 2 singles match was halted by rain with both teams tied at one set apiece.

Teammate Taylor Steed supplied the offense, hitting two doubles and driving in three runs. Kelsey Stoeser batted 1-for-3 with a run scored and two stolen bases for the Wildcats.
