Vote for The Herald’s Prep Athlete of the Week for Dec. 19-31

The Athlete of the Week nominees for Dec. 19-31. Voting closes at midnight Sunday. The winner will be announced with the next poll and in next Tuesday’s edition of The Herald.

Gia Powell | Meadowdale | Girls Basketball

Powell, a junior, hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer to lift the Mavericks past Class 3A state runner-up Lake Washington, 65-64, on Dec. 17. She finished with 25 points. She won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week voting for Dec. 12-18 by claiming 391 (28.5%) of 291 votes.

This week’s nominees

Jaxon Dubiel | Mountlake Terrace | Boys Basketball

Dubiel, a junior, hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds to lift the Hawks to a 55-54 victory over Rogers (Puyallup) on Dec. 28. Dubiel finished with a team-high 17 points. He also poured in a game-high 28 points to lead Mountlake Terrace to a key 68-50 victory over fellow Wesco 3A/2A contender Arlington on Dec. 30.

Aniya Hooker | Lynnwood | Girls Basketball

Hooker, a junior, poured in a game-high 23 points in the Royals’ 63-45 win over Ballard on Dec. 28. She also led Lynnwood with 17 points in its 60-44 victory over Kamiak on Dec. 30.

Mason Fitzwater | Monroe | Boys Wrestling

Fitzwater, a senior, won the 152-pound title at the Doc Herren Holiday Tournament on Dec. 30 at Auburn High School. Fitzwater scored a win via first-round pin in the semifinals and pulled out a 6-5 decision over Silas’ Carter Johnson in the championship match.

Ava Marr | Archbishop Murphy | Girls Basketball

Marr, a sophomore, recorded a double-double with 26 points and 10 assists in the Wildcats’ 62-24 victory over Nathan Hale on Dec. 30.

Josiah Pierre | Kamiak | Boys Basketball

Pierre, a senior, hit the game-winning shot with 1.5 seconds left to lead the Knights to 84-83 win in the semifinals of the Clark County Holiday Invitational on Dec. 29. Pierre netted a game-high 41 points.
