Vote for The Herald’s Prep Athlete of the Week for Feb. 20-26

The Athlete of the Week nominees for Feb. 20-26. Voting closes at midnight Sunday. The winner will be announced with the next poll and in next Tuesday’s edition of The Herald.

Connor Aney | Glacier Peak | Boys Wrestling

Aney, a sophomore, pulled out a 5-4 ultimate tiebreaker victory over Sunnyside’s Mateo Armendariz to secure the 4A 285-pound state title at Mat Classic XXXIV on Feb. 18. He won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week voting for Feb. 13-19 by claiming 589 (32.4%) of 1,820 votes.

This week’s nominees

Jailin Johnson | Mariner | Boys Basketball

Johnson, a senior, poured in a game-high 29 points as the Marauders bested Chiawana 85-74 on Feb. 25 to earn a berth to the Class 4A Hardwood Classic at the Tacoma Dome.

Zaveon Jones | Mountlake Terrace | Boys Basketball

Jones, a junior, posted 19 points, six rebounds and four assists in the Hawks’ 54-52 loss to Eastside Catholic on Feb. 25.

Kayla Lorenz | Lynnwood | Girls Basketball

Lorenz, a junior, scored a team-high 25 points as the Royals topped West Seattle 47-45 on Feb. 25 to clinch a berth to the Class 3A Hardwood Classic at the Tacoma Dome.

Mylie Wugumgeg | Everett | Girls Basketball

Wugumgeg, a junior, scored a team-high 23 points and made a pair of key free throws in the closing moments as the Eagles defeated Peninsula 56-51 on Feb. 24 to seal up a berth to the Class 3A Hardwood Classic at the Tacoma Dome.
