The Athlete of the Week nominees for May 22-28 Voting closes at midnight Sunday. The winner will be announced with the next poll and in next Tuesday’s edition of The Herald.

Hailey Pelletier | Jackson | Softball

Pelletier, a junior, hit the go-ahead home run in the top of the seventh inning to help the Timberwolves to a 2-1 victory over Bothell in the Class 4A District 1/2 tournament title game May 19. She won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week voting for May 15-21 by claiming 512 (57.92%) of 884 votes.

This week’s nominees

Grant Buckmiller | Lake Stevens | Boys Track and Field

Buckmiller, a senior, blazed his way to Class 4A boys state championships in the 200 meters, 400 meters and was a member of the Vikings’ victorious 4×400 relay squad at the state track and field championships May 25-27 in Tacoma. He set a Snohomish County record in the 400 (46.62 seconds).

Elias Caniglia | Stanwood | Boys Track and Field

Caniglia, a sophomore, used a personal-best leap of 6 feet, 6 inches to claim the Class 3A boys high jump state title at the state track and field championships May 25-27 in Tacoma.

Jaedyn Chase | Kamiak | Boys Track and Field

Chase, a senior, used a personal-best time of 9:17.88 to claim first place in the Class 4A boys 32oo meters at the state track and field championships May 25-27 in Tacoma. He also placed fifth in the 1600.

Kalia Estes | Kamiak | Girls Track and Field

Estes, a senior, won the Class 4A girls 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.17 seconds at the state track and field championships May 25-27 in Tacoma. She also placed fourth in the 100 hurdles.

Charlotte Giffin | Cedarcrest | Girls Golf

Giffin, a senior, shot back-to-back 69s to finish with a 6-under 138 and claim first place at the Class 2A girls golf state championships May 23 and 24 at Meadowwood Golf Course in Liberty Lake. She finished seven strokes in front of her nearest competitor.

Avery Keith | Snohomish | Boys Track and Field

Keith, a senior, posted a personal-best 48.00 seconds to win the Class 3A boys 400 meters at the state track and field championships May 25-27 in Tacoma. He also helped the Panthers’ 4×400 relay team to a third-place finish.

Kellen Langford | Arlington | Boys Track and Field

Langford, a senior, ran a personal-best 1:51.67 for a first-place finish in the Class 3A boys 800 meters at the state track and field championships May 25-27 in Tacoma. He also placed fifth in the 1600 and helped the Eagles’ 4×400 relay team to a fourth-place finish.

Ben Lee | Jackson | Boys Tennis

Lee, a sophomore, didn’t drop a set on his way to four straight victories and the Class 4A boys tennis singles title at the state tennis championships May 26 and 27 in Kennewick.

Jaquan Means | Kamiak | Boys Track and Field

Means, a senior, ran a personal-best 14.52 seconds to win the Class 4A boys 110-meter hurdles at the state track and field championships May 25-27 in Tacoma. He also placed second in the 300 hurdles.

Yanina Sherwood | Jackson | Softball

Sherwood, a junior, led the way in the circle as the Timberwolves claimed the Class 4A state championship with four victories in Richland on May 26 and 27. Her efforts included a 14-strikeout shutout in Jackson’s opening-round win over Kamiakin and allowing only one run in the team’s 5-1 championship victory over Glacier Peak.

Jana Willems | Glacier Peak | Girls Track and Field

Willems, a senior, took first place in the 4A girls 100 meters with a time of 12.30 seconds at the state track and field championships May 25-27 in Tacoma. She also placed second in the 200 and helped the Grizzlies’ 4×100 relay team to fourth-place finish.
