EDMONDS – For the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors a discouraging word was not to be Heard.
Minus it’s standout running back/linebacker Josh Heard – who suffered a possible concussion in the waning seconds of the first half after already having rushed for 105 yards – E-W outlasted the Meadowdale Mavericks 21-20 in a thrilling Western Conference South Division game before a standing-room-only crowd at Edmonds Stadium Friday night.
The victory kept E-W (3-0 in league, 3-0 overall) tied atop the Wesco South division with Shorecrest. With it’s first loss Meadowdale dropped to 2-1, 2-1.
Trailing 20-14 with 6:23 remaining in the third quarter Warriors’ quarterback Randy Anderson (11-for-16, 148 yards, 2 TD) engineered a 16 play, 65-yard drive capped by his 8-yard TD toss to Casey Hamlett with 10:33 remaining in the game.
Kicker Grady Harmon – who filled in for Heard by rushing 7 times for 45 yards in the second half – booted the extra point to provide E-W’s margin of victory.
Anderson used multiple receivers including Eric Greenwood (5 receptions, 53 yards), Hamlett (4 receptions, 41 yards) and Kellan Mackey (2 catches, 54 yards).
After an exchange of punts Meadowdale – which trailed 14-0 by midway into the second quarter but battled back with two TD’s in the final four minutes of the first half to knot the score 14-14 – launched its final comeback bid from its own 16-yard line with 6:47 remaining.
Quarterback Matt Johnson (15 carries, 45 yards, TD and 6-13 48 yards passing) used 18 plays to drive the Mavericks 54 yards to the E-W 20 with time ticking away. A 37-yard field goal attempt with 8 seconds remaining was wide left.
Johnson mixed up the Meadowdale attack effectively with his own running and passing along with that of Kevin Kim (8 carries, 74 yards, fumble recovery for TD) and Hans Peterson (12 carries, 54 yards).
E-W opened a 7-0 lead on its first possession when Anderson drove the Warriors 68 yards in nine plays. Greenwood’s 17-yard TD reception gave the Warriors a 7-0 lead with 7:23 remaining in the first quarter.
Heard ran 27 yards for another Warriors score with 8:02 remaining in the first half to give E-W a 14-0 lead.
Tonna Mjoku returned the ensuing kickoff 46 yards to jumpstart a 9-play, 54-yard scoring drive that brought Meadowdale to within 14-6 with 4:37 remaining in the second quarter.
Meadowadle Travis Cramer forced a fumble on E-W’s next possession that was recovered by Jonathan Lambert at the Warrior 27.
Seven plays later Peterson lost his handle on the ball as he bowled into the end zone but Kim dived on it for a Maverick touchdown.
On the conversion attempt, Johnson rolled right and threw back across the grain to Jacob Clampitt for a two-point conversion to knot the score 14-14.
