SEATTLE – Kevin Ware. a tight end at the University of Washington, has received a one-year suspended sentence and 240 hours of community service after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge.
Ware, 21, a junior from Spring, Texas, was charged with striking a university police officer who was trying to break up a fight on campus Dec. 2.
Ware initially pleaded innocent in King County Superior Court to a felony charge of third-degree assault. But he entered a guilty plea Monday, after the charge was reduced to fourth-degree misdemeanor assault.
Besides the suspended sentence and community service, Judge Kenneth Comstock ordered Ware to pay a $500 fine, with restitution to be determined later. He also must abstain from alcohol for 12 months and undergo a drug and alcohol evaluation.
Ware was suspended after his arrest and missed the Huskies’ trip to the Holiday Bowl in San Diego.
Ware appeared in 10 games last season, with seven catches for 102 yards. Starting tight end Jerramy Stevens, a junior, is leaving to enter the NFL draft.
