The 30th running of the Hot Plug’s annual Blackmouth Derby hits the water Saturday. It’s a small, local event that provides pretty good odds of taking home a few bucks in prize money. The top four fish win a percentage of the entry fees: 50 percent for first, then 20, 15 and 10 percent. Additionally, $100 cash prizes will be drawn for two ticket holders, fish or no fish. The lucky anglers must be present to win.
It’s an all-weather derby. Fishing is allowed in Marine Areas 8-1 and 8-2 only. The entry fee is $50, payable at the Stanwood Eagles through Friday, and at Elger Bay Grocery, Camano Marine, Holiday Sports and John’s Sporting Goods until 2 p.m. Friday. The weigh-in (3 to 4:30 p.m.) and prize awards will be held at the Stanwood Eagles, located at 6419 Pioneer Highway in Stanwood. For directions call 360-629-3224.

Assuming decent weather, the event should put out some fish. Action has been stronger than usual in areas 8-1 and 8-2 so far this winter at such spots as the racetrack, the southeast corner of Hat Island, and Columbia Beach.
