Wesco South girls hoops showdown tonight

Finally, the wait is over.

Round 2 between the Jackson and Meadowdale girls basketball teams is scheduled for tip-off at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Lynnwood. Based on Jackson’s two-point triumph over the Mavericks in Mill Creek a little more than a month ago, the rematch should be amazing. Other adjectives that come to mind when I anticipate this battle: intense, fast-paced, entertaining.

This game is special for many reasons. First, it’s the final time star guards Kristi Kingma (Jackson) and Eryn Jones (Meadowdale) will compete head-to-head in a high school contest. They’ll go separate routes (Class 4A and 3A, respectively) in the postseason.

Another even bigger angle is what’s at stake for the teams. First-place Jackson (8-0 in Western Conference South Division games) can take a huge step towards winning a league championship by earning another victory over Meadowdale (8-1 Wesco South, 12-1 overall).

Meadowdale coach Dan Taylor said losing at Jackson last month was actually good for the Mavericks: “It helped us because they were able to exploit some (weaknesses) that we were able to work on. It was good to see (a challenge) early on.”

Jackson won the previous encounter 69-67. Taylor said it could be another up-tempo game but he hopes his girls don’t give up that many points this time.

There’s been plenty of buzz about the highly anticipated game among Meadowdale students this week, Taylor said. He expects a huge crowd.

“People at school are talking about it,” he said. “It should be a good show.”
