Speaking of dangerous hits, here’s the update on Tips center Clayton Cumiskey. On Tuesday Tips coach Craig Hartsburg acknowledged that Cumiskey’s upper-body injury is a concussion. Cumiskey, who suffered the injury on Oct. 1 against Kamloops, has not yet returned to practice as the Tips are taking every precaution.
Cumiskey was hurt when he was hit high away from the play by Kamloops defenseman Linden Saip. Saip was not penalized on the play, but later received a two-game suspension from the league under supplemental discipline.
Count Hartsburg among those concerned about concussions in hockey:
“(Concussions) are the things that are really bad about today’s game, not just at this level but at higher levels,” Hartsburg said. “To me it’s become a disturbing part of the game. It’s careless hits. You want your players to play physical and compete, but the carelessness is what we have to try to get out of the game.”
