WHL notebook: Thunderbirds’ goalie Mumaugh retires

A goaltender in Seattle has decided to hang up his skates.

Danny Mumaugh, who spent the past three seasons with the Thunderbirds, chose to end his WHL career, the team announced Monday.

Mumaugh, an 18-year-old from Centennial, Colorado, was in his third season as Seattle’s primary No. 2 goaltender, backing up Brandon Glover in 2012-13 and Taran Kozun the past two seasons. He ended up appearing in 61 games with the T-birds, going 18-21-4-4 with a 3.76 goals against average, .887 save percentage and one shutout.

This season Mumaugh saw little game action as the T-birds have leaned heavily upon the overage Kozun. He was 2-4 with a 4.18 goals against average and .858 save percentage in eight games before announcing his retirement.

“Danny came to us recently and told us he did not have the drive to keep playing,” Seattle general manager Russ Farwell said in a press release.

To replace Mumaugh the T-birds called up 17-year-old Logan Flodell for the remainder of the season. Flodell, who made one start for Seattle at the beginning of the season, had been playing with the Nipawin Hawks of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, with whom he was 8-4-0 with a 2.44 goals against average and .901 save percentage in 13 contests.

Flodell impressed with Seattle during the preseason and was considered a strong candidate to earn the backup job, which eventually went to Mumaugh.

“To have a player quit this soon after the (Jan. 10) trade deadline could have left us in a real bind,” Farwell said in the release. “We are fortunate that Logan is able to join us. We appreciate the Nipawin Hawks working with us to allow Logan to join the team for the remainder of the season.”
