Fans haven’t had to watch Carlos Silva pitch since he went on the disabled list May 9 because of inflammation in his right shoulder.
The inflammation has subsided — in the shoulder, but maybe not in fans’ memory from Silva’s 1-3 record and 8.48 ERA — and he has “successfully” made his way through a minor league rehab stint. And tonight, the Mariners have activated him from the disabled list.
Silva will be available out of the bullpen. Tomake room for him on the 40-man roster, the Mariners placed reliever Sean White on the 60-day DL because of tendinitis in his right shoulder.
Silva began his first game back the way all bullpen rookies have this season — wearing the pink girls’ backpack containing gum, seeds and assorted items that only this goofy group of relievers will use during a game.
How can Silva be forced to wear the pink backpack, which typically is the duty handed to rookies? He may be a major league veteran, but he’s a newcomer to this bullpen. Therefore, he strapped on the pink backpack and carried it to a place many of his pitches wound up the past two years — the bullpen beyond the left-field fence.
