High School baseball players won’t get a chance to play at Safeco Field next year.
Following its July meeting, the WIAA Executive Board announced Tuesday that the 2011 Class 4A and Class 3A state baseball championships will move to Cheney Stadium in Tacoma. For several years the 3A and 4A semifinals, consolation games and championship games were played at Safeco in Seattle. But a scheduling conflict at Safeco caused the WIAA to move the games to Tacoma.
Also, the WIAA released more details about the revamped state basketball tournament format. Here are the Executive Board’s latest decisions, according to a WIAA press release:
*District tournaments will be allowed to run as late as the Tuesday prior to the start of the first round (round of 16) of the state tournament (Tuesday, Feb. 22). *There will be two No. 1 seeds and two No. 2 seeds at each site for the first round of the tournament on Friday, Feb. 25. The No. 1s will play each other and the No. 2s will play each other. The winner of the No. 1s will move on to the round of eight, which will be held March 3-5. The loser of the No. 1s will play the winner of the No. 2s on Saturday, Feb. 26. The winner of that game will also advance to the round of eight. *The first-round sites (round of 16) will be finalized during this fall.
