PORTLAND, Ore. — The Everett Silvertips ended a difficult weekend with a gutsy effort Sunday. However, the Tips were only able to come away with a single point.

A depleted Everett team, playing its third game in three nights against top competition, suffered a 5-4 shootout loss to the Po

rtland Winterhawks.

Everett, which played two players short because of injuries and illness, grabbed an early three-goal lead against the team in first place in the Western Conference, and the Tips led 4-2 going into the third period.

However, Everett ran out of gas at the end, with Tyler Wotherspoon and Nino Niederreiter scoring third-period goals for Portland to tie the score.

Then after a scoreless overtime, Portland won the shootout 1-0. Portland goalie Mac Carruth, who was pulled in the first period, was reinserted for the shootout and stopped all three attempts he faced. Sven Bartschi scored the only goal of the shootout.

Ryan Johansen and Oliver Gabriel also scored for Portland (27-12-0-3) in regulation. Carruth stopped four of seven shots before being pulled. Keith Hamilton stopped 20 of 21 in relief.

Josh Birkholz, Parker Stanfield, Cody Fowlie and Tyler Giebel scored for Everett (17-19-2-4), which is 1-4 in shootouts this season. Ryan Murray added three assists as Everett finished with three of a possible six points from the challenging weekend.

Tips goalie Kent Simpson, returning from the flu, stopped 45 shots in the loss.

Everett was already missing several players because of injuries and illness, including leading scorer Tyler Maxwell (illness). Those ranks swelled Sunday, with defensemen Rasmus Rissanen (illness) and Alex Theriau (lower body) also scratched for health reasons. That left Everett with just 16 skaters available.

Nevertheless, Everett jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. Birkholz scored off the rush just 1 minute 17 seconds into the game. Then Stanfield scored on the power play and Fowlie scored on a tip to give Everett a shock 3-0 lead just 7:11 in.

It was 4-2 going into the third period when the Winterhawks started to swarm. Wotherspoon scored on a shot off the rush that went in off Simpson’s glove at 9:42. Then with just 3:38 remaining Niederreiter converted a feed from Brad Ross to tie it, forcing overtime and eventually the decisive shootout.
