Worth the wait: Cedarcrest routs Steilacoom

DUVALL – The Cedarcrest girls soccer team’s assault on the Class 2A state tournament was not going to be delayed any longer.

Steilacoom felt all of the Red Wolves fury in the opening round state tournament game as Cedarcrest captured a 5-0 victory Thursday night in Duvall. The game was delayed two days by flood waters.

Cedarcrest advances to play Ridgefield at 1 p.m. Saturday at Tumwater High School. Cedarcrest is undefeated with 20 straight victories and finished third in the Class 3A state tournament last season.

“We definitely have the (state) finals in our sight, but once it is game time we focus on that game,” Cedarcrest forward Amanda Johnson said. “We definitely want to take it all the way and go out with a bang.”

After a flurry of shots barely missed the goal early on, Rachael Kevin scored off of an Erin Kearney pass in the 11th minute to start the Red Wolves scoring spree.

Cedarcrest’s next three goals came in a four minute span, beginning with Johnson’s corner kick in the 23rd minute that was headed at the goal by Sarah Dowd and deflected past Steilacoom’s goalkeeper by Claire O’Donnel to give the Red Wolves a 2-0 lead.

Johnson, not unlike the game itself, which was delayed 45 minutes because of traffic, took a while to get warmed up. But the star forward scored her 37th and 38th goals of the season in a span of two minutes late in the first half to put the game out of Steilacoom’s reach.

“She may have been off a little bit,” Cedarcrest coach Greg Anderson said of Johnson. “I think their rhythm was upset tonight by the wait.”

Senior captain Amanda Biggs rifled in a 30-yard free kick to cap off the Red Wolves scoring in the 66th minute. Biggs has recently been moved from midfield to a defensive position due to an injury to starting sweeper Kallie Preis.

“She has become a great team player and assists people around her to make the team better,” Anderson said.

Cedarcrest limited Steilacoom to three shots on goal.
