PULLMAN — A fake video of former President Barack Obama sent out in a tweet by Washington State University’s head football coach cost the school about $1.6 million in lost donations.
Phil Weiler, the school’s vice president for marketing and communications, says donors altered future estate gifts after coach Mike Leach tweeted and then defended the fake video in June.
The edited video with a doctored audio track made it appear Obama had made statements he had not made during a 2014 speech.
The Lewiston Tribune reports that Washington State University President Kirk Schulz in a meeting at the newspaper on Wednesday says no one asked for donations back.
Weiler says five donors changed plans involving future estate donations upon the donor’s death.
Schulz says the estate donors might change their mind.
