A feast of festivals

The summer festival season is once again about to get underway – and summer’s still a month away! Here’s a rundown of the major celebrations taking place in local communities.

Most events are free unless otherwise noted; come hungry (and bring your wallet), as all these festivals feature food as a main attraction.

Edmonds Waterfront Festival

When: 3-10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday, May 30-June 1.

Where: Port of Edmonds Marina, 400 Admiral Way, Edmonds.

What: The 21st annual event features marine exhibits, ducks on parade, food booths, live music, family entertainment stage, arts &crafts, kids arcade with inflatable toys, free trout fishing for kids, beer &wine garden with live music for adults. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Edmonds, proceeds from the festival benefit Rotary charity projects.

Admission: $3 per person, children 10 &under are free.

Lynnwood Hi!5 10K &5K Fun Run

When: 9 a.m. Sunday, June 8.

Where: Begins and ends at The Terraces at Alderwood Mall, 3000 184th St. SW, Lynnwood.

What: 10K and 5K Certified Runs and Kids Dash, to benefit the charities and scholarships of the Rotary Club of Lynnwood.

Register: $20 pre-registration (adults), $15 students 17 &under, before June 6.

Edmonds Arts Festival

When: 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday, June 13-15.

Where: Frances Anderson Center, 700 Main St., Edmonds.

What: The 51st annual arts celebration spans three days over Father’s Day weekend with more than 750 artist exhibitors, fine arts and crafts exhibits, children’s art exhibits, hands-on children’s activity area, live entertainment on two performance stages, limited edition posters, food court and wine bar &bistro. Proceeds support arts scholarships, educational grants, public art and community arts organizations.

Shoreline Arts Festival

When: 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, June 28 &29.

Where: Shoreline Center, 18560 First Ave. NE, Shoreline.

What: The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council celebration of art features continuous entertainment, music and dance, juried art shows, photography show, artists and artists in action, hands-on art, and food. The Missoula Children’s Theatre will present “Red Riding Hood,” featuring a cast of 50 local students (separate $6 admission); other events include “Art from the Attic” Recycled Art Sale, Northwest Collage Society Exhibit and Collage Making workshop, Shoreline Philippine Festival, Chinese Cultural Room, Eritrean African Cultural Room and a used book sale.

Skandia Midsommarfest

When: 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday, June 29.

Where: St. Edward State Park, Kenmore.

What: Skandia Folkdance Society’s 50th annual authentic Nordic celebration of the summer solstice features a folk parade and raising of the Midsommar Pole, dancing, music, children’s activities, traditional handicrafts and food and participants in authentic Nordic costumes.

Meet Me in Mill Creek Festival

When: 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday &Sunday, July 12 &13.

Where: Main Street between 153rd St. SE and 151st St. SE, Mill Creek Town Center.

What: 8th annual festival features entertainment stages, children’s activities, arts and crafts, food court &wine bistro, car show, Pet Plaza, non-competitive walk, non-profit organization and commercial booths.

Swingin’ Summer Eve

When: 5:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 23.

Where: Cromwell Park, 18009 Meridian Ave. N., Shoreline.

What: Sponsored by the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council and the City of Shoreline, the event includes live music, a barbecue fundraiser by the Shoreline Fire Dept. and pre-concert games and activities for children.

Tour de Terrace

When: Noon-11 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-11 p.m. Saturday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday, July 25-27.

Where: Evergreen Playfields, 56th Ave. W &224th St. SW, Mountlake Terrace.

What: The annual three-day community festival sponsored by Terrace Brier Lions Club begins with a parade Friday evening; Saturday’s festivities kick off in the morning with a 5K run, pancake breakfast, then continue with a street fair, live music, a carnival, miniature golf, arts &crafts, a car show and a fireworks display at 10 p.m.

A Taste of Edmonds

When: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday &Saturday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8-10.

Where: Civic Playfield, Sixth &Bell, Edmonds.

What: Washington’s 2nd largest three-day festival celebrates its 26th year of offering tastes of local restaurants and food vendors, arts &crafts booths, children’s area, four entertainment stages, roaming performers and separate beer and wine gardens.

Admission: $3 per person; free for ages 12 &under.

Brier SeaScare &Porchlight Parade

When: 6-10 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13.

Where: Downtown Brier, between Brier Library (232th) and Brier Realty (238th)

What: This casual community event features a kid-focused parade with a “sea” theme — scary sea creatures, octopi, pirates, boats, nautical or any sea related idea, kid’s games and activities, food drive, book sale, musical entertainment, pie eating contest, “Outdoor Cinema,” and food and beverages.

Celebrate Shoreline

When: Noon-5 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17-19.

Where: Various locations, Shoreline.

What: Shoreline’s 13th birthday celebration includes a teen skateboard competition and party event at the Connie King Skate Park; a 5K walk/run and 10K run, parade, a festival at Ridgecrest Elementary School featuring food booths, arts &crafts, community groups and car show and a sandcastle contest at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park.

Bothell RiverFest

When: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24.

Where: between Main St. &NE 185th St., downtown Bothell.

What: Annual community event celebrates the end of summer with fun, food, and entertainment for all, including car show, City of Bothell Show &Tell, craft &merchants market, inflatable toys and other activities for kids, hobby &volunteer expo, and a concert.

Admission: Free.

Hot Autumn Nites

When: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6.

Where: Fountain area, downtown Edmonds.

What: Annual classic car show in downtown Edmonds features stock cars &trucks, muscle cars, modified custom cars and vintage classics with awards, games, prizes.

Admission: Free.
