Pirates, mermaids, octopi and a sea monster named Barnacle Billy are among the sea creatures expected to surface at Brier’s seventh annual SeaScare and Porch Light Parade Wednesday, Aug. 13.

The highlight of the event is always the parade which features an ever evolving cast of entertaining participants decked out in imaginative seafaring garb, plus local classic cars, race cars and local school marching bands.

The parade starts at 7 p.m. on Brier Road at the library (232nd) and travels southbound, ending at Brier Realty (238th) at approximately 8 p.m. Prizes will be awarded in various parade categories, including for the best Jolly Roger flag (black with a white skull and crossbones). Parade participants will gather at 6:30 p.m.

From 7 to 8:30 p.m. downtown Brier will also host a children’s carnival, a used book sale sponsored by the Friends of the Brier Library, a food drive benefiting Concern for Neighbors Food Bank, a clothing and shoes drive benefitting Clothes for Kids, and a local business trade show.

Also following the parade will be musical entertainment featuring The KD and District Pipe Band and The Three Generations Bluegrass Band. Beverages, food and other services will be available from all the merchants during the event.

At 8:30 p.m. the pie eating contest get underway. This year’s flavor: chocolate cream, the perennial favorite. Beverages, food and other services will be available from Brier merchants during the event.

The outdoor movie gets rolling at sunset (around 9:15 p.m.) when Reverend Chumleigh returns to town to screen cartoons and the 1960 classic SeaScare theme movie “The Little Shop of Horrors,” Roger Corman’s B-movie cult classic that inspired a stage musical abd featuring Jack Nicholson as a masochistic dental patient. Bring lawn chairs for your viewing pleasure.

Residents and local businesses are encouraged to decorate yards, houses and businesses with Christmas lights and other SeaScare decorations by Aug. 4. The decorations will be judged on creativity and looks before the SeaScare event and the winners announced and prizes given during the parade.

The Brier Salmon Derby also returns this year. Buy a raffle ticket to win a large salmon. Look for staff selling tickets throughout the evening. Must be present to win, drawing will be held right after the parade.
