A rewarding dining experience

North City Bistro is a place with a lot of personality — and that’s not just because it doubles as a wine shop.

Located, as the name indicates, in Shoreline’s North City, this place of food and spirits has only been in business for seven months.

On a recent weekend, a date and I ventured to the above stated location. We expected nothing, and as is often the case, were rewarded with a great meal. And a great time.

The atmosphere was both casual and classy, with a very small-town feel. Being somewhat of a small-town expert, having grown up in eastern Washington, I can say this with confidence.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the owner and chef, Rich. He was extremely amiable, to the point where we did not need menus. He rambled off a list of choices, with much better descriptions than a menu could afford.

My date settled on the grilled lamb loin chop. After much debate, I selected a teriyaki chicken breast salad.

While we waited for our dinner, we were not left to starve. We munched on wheat dinner rolls and butter. But before I could even finish my dinner roll, the real meal arrived.

My teriyaki chicken breast salad was served with a sliced egg, cheese, sesame seeds, a light dressing, and peppers. The flavor of the chicken was excellent. I couldn’t have done better myself.

My guest’s meal, the grilled lamb loin chop, was served with garlic potatoes and asparagus with hollandaise sauce. And according to him, it was also very good.

I am an extremely slow eater by nature, which is not a bad thing if one is not in a hurry. And we really were in no hurry to leave the bistro. It was airy, warm, and we felt quite at home. This may have been my inspiration to order the homemade bread pudding and ice cream.

I was stuffed, but there is always room for more. At least that is my experience. My grandmother used to gently pinch my stomach to see if there was more, and there always was. A tried and true method, for sure.

Even with the assistance of my date, and the mind set that there is always room for more, I could not finish the bread pudding. Everyone has their limits, I guess.

But overall, North City Bistro is a place worth stopping for. Other stand-out items on the menu include New York strip steak, lasagna, macaroni, meat loaf, stuffed flank steak, Maryland chicken, goat cheese and sun dried tomato ravioli and American lamb stew. The menu varies daily, so it may be best to call ahead or drop by and pick up a copy of featured items.
