Larger than life puppets animate two West African tales of Anansi, the trickster spider, presented by Tears of Joy Puppet Theatre June 30 as part of Lynnwood’s Wonderstage children’s performance series.

In the first tale, Anansi wins the right to name the animal stories that belonged to an egotistical snake. In the second tale, Anansi tricks a gullible elephant from inside a melon. Tears of Joy Theatre brings puppet theatre to audiences throughout the U.S. and abroad. Founded in 1971, the theatre is recognized nationally for its commitment to excellence and innovation. Three of the Tears of Joy’s productions have received American puppetry’s highest honor, the Citation of Excellence in the Art of Puppetry.

The Lynnwood Arts Commission presents Tears of Joy’s “Anansi the Spider” noon Wednesday, June 30 at Lynndale Park Amphitheater, located at 18927 72nd Ave. W., Lynnwood. This free, one hour performance is part of the Mervyn’s Wonderstage Performance Series for Youth and is suitable for 5-11 year olds and their families. The series is sponsored by the Lynnwood Arts Commission and City of Lynnwood Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department, Mervyn’s and by a grant from the Washington State Arts Commission.

In case of rain, the performance is moved indoors to Lynndale Elementary School Gym, 7200 191st St. SW, Lynnwood. For more information call the Lynnwood Recreation Center at 425-771-4030.
