Three Shoreline area girls golf teams hit the links this spring. Here’s the skinny on each:
Shorecrest
No clear No. 1 player has emerged for the Scots, who field a team of five. Senior Esther Lim and junior Robyn Hasegawa, the Scots’ co-captains, are playing about even right now, new head coach Bob Quiles said. Jenelle Melchoir, a senior and four-year varsity player also could vie for the top spot. Melchoir has been rehabilitating a back injury.
Filling the No. 3 spot right now is freshman Samantha Gwazdauskas. Freshman Stephanie Rood rounds out the lineup. The two freshman show a lot of promise and have “improved a ton since we’ve started,” Quiles said.
The upperclassmen have demonstrated strong leadership so far as well, he said.
Shorecrest competes in the Western Conference South Division Group B with league stalwart Kamiak, Shorewood, Edmonds-Woodway and Meadowdale.
Shorewood
Shorewood has seven players out but it’s going to be a rebuilding year for the Thunderbirds, co-head coach Alex Burns said.
The T-birds have two strong players in senior Brooke Snyder and sophomore Shannon Quinn, who have shared co-medalist honors in a match this season.
“We’re looking for them to do good things and carry the team,” Burns said.
Shorewood sent one golfer, 2006 graduate Staci Walsh, to state last year. Walsh was the first T-bird to qualify since Kim Shin in 2003.
King’s
The Knights lost their two standouts, Katie Lyon and Kristin Sawtell, who led the team to a second place finish at the state 2A tournament last year.
This season, King’s, now a 1A school, will be looking to retool for the years to come.
Senior Heather Kim is the Knights’ No. 1 player and scores between 14 to 18 Stableford points (four points for a par, five for a birdie and so on) per match.
Freshman Carolyn Dapper has played for several years and has emerged as the team’s top newcomer.
“I’m hoping in the next few weeks she’ll be turning out some good scores,” coach Gerry Lumansoc said.
Sophomore Megan Foote also has shown promise. The Knights have 12 girls out for golf this year.
South Whidbey appears to be the strongest team in the Cascade Conference with Cedarcrest and Archbishop Murphy not far behind.
