From new grass fields to a full-scale modernization, local schools have undergone, or will undergo, work this year. Among the capital projects:

• Silver Firs Elementary School now has an upgraded HVAC system. It includes new furnaces in classrooms, the gym, cafeteria, administration and library, the cleaning of ductwork and a new central control system that lets district maintenance remotely monitor and adjust the heating system.

• The sand field at Gateway Middle School has been replaced with grass and is ready for use. The field, one of two at Gateway, is multi-purpose and used for physical education, softball, soccer and more. The other field is a football field.

• The sand field at Heatherwood Middle School will be replaced with natural grass turf and be ready for use in spring 2008. The work was done this summer, but it takes time for the grass to get established, according to district staff. The field, as at Gateway, is multipurpose and used for softball, soccer and other sports. The other field is a football field.

• The district is replacing Heatherwood’s covered play shed roof, which was damaged in the storm last winter. The work was scheduled to be done by mid-September.

• Work began in June on modernizing Silver Lake Elementary School and is scheduled to be done by December 2008. Parts of the school were originally constructed in 1936 and 1959.

• The district has moved three portables to Mill Creek Elementary because of an anticipated increase in student population this year. Mill Creek had 589 students in October 2006 and is projected to have 620 in October 2007. The school already had one portable.
