New park near Martha lake coming

Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon and other community leaders celebrated the beginning of construction at Martha Lake Airport Community Park with a ground breaking Monday, Feb. 23.

The property, located off 146th Street West in Lynnwood, was purchased in 2000 from the Howe family, who had operated the Martha Lake Airport for many years.

The $3.1 million project includes baseball and soccer fields, a picnic shelter, restrooms, playground, trails, storm drainage facility, three commissioned artwork pieces and parking for 105 vehicles. The 18-acre park also will feature the county’s first skateboard park.

Three pieces of art are included in this park project as part of the county’s ordinance requiring that 1 percent of total bid costs be contributed to the arts.

As this site was a former airfield, artwork will pay homage to flight. Michael Whiting will create a “pixilated figure” sculpture of a skateboarder in flight doing a nose grab. Other artworks include a five-sculpture series by Peter Reiquam called “Simple Arrow” and a 14-foot sculpture of Da Vinci wings activated for flight by Rociante Studios.

For more information on this park or others within the county parks system, go to www.snocoparks.org or call 425-388-6600.
