Spread holiday joy, support food banks

Community groups willing to share their musical talents this holiday season will be supporting local food banks and the Salvation Army.

Participating groups — organizations, bands, choirs, families or friends — may designate a local food bank or the Salvation Army as the beneficiary of the donation.

Sing from the Heart will be presented at each store from 2 p.m.-7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, 12 p.m.-7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15 and 12 p.m-5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16. Sign-up for a specific time at the guest services counter of each TOP Food store or by calling a store. For more information, visit www.Top-Foods.com.

“Parade Route” sculpture dedication

The long-awaited sculpture in the North City commercial area will be dedicated on Monday, Dec. 17, at 3 p.m. The public is invited to join City Council members and staff to celebrate the latest addition to the City of Shoreline’s public art collection located on the east side 15th Avenue Northeast just north of Northeast 177th Street.

Iowa artist Chris Bennett worked with the Shoreline Parks maintenance crew to install his cast bronze artwork “Parade Route” in mid-November. The sculpture, depicting a grandfather with his grandson on his shoulders, was funded by the City of Shoreline’s 1% for Art Program and is a visual addition to the street that is host to Shoreline’s “Celebrate Shoreline” parade every August.

Artist Chris Bennett specializes in classically rendered sculptures of human figures and animal wildlife. He has created more than 45 public works of art for parks, colleges, liturgical settings, private residences and hospitals. The City hopes “Parade Route” will encourage people to participate in the North City neighborhood,

Artists needed for Shoreline design projects

The city of Shoreline invites artists in Washington and Oregon to submit qualifications for an opportunity at Cromwell Park. The selected artist(s) will work with the design team to visually enhance the environment at this central location on Meridian Avenue North.

The park project includes extensive stormwater management re-development as well as new paths, play areas, gathering places and paths. Thirty thousand dollars is available for this project.

Shoreline is also looking for qualified artists within the state for a suspended artwork in the lobby of the Spartan Recreation Center. The goal is to create a more visually interesting and welcoming entrance to this busy facility. Eleven thousand dollars is available for this project.

Additional details about these projects are available on the city Web site at www.cityofshoreline.com/parks.

The deadline to submit qualifications for either project is Jan. 3. For more information contact public art coordinator Ros Bird at rbird@ci.shoreline.wa.us.
