Library book sale set for weekend a real page-turner
It’s that time again.
For the 27th year in a row, the Friends of the Edmonds Library will be selling books, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Frances Anderson Center.
Proceeds from the sale support ongoing Friends of the Library projects, including the purchase of library equipment and program enhancements.
Thousands of donated books collected throughout the year will be arranged by category for shoppers to make selections.
Book categories for the annual event include fiction and nonfiction, featuring a range of old and new novels, biography, history, art and reference books, with sections devoted to travel, sports, gardening, foreign language, cooking, children’s literature and more.
DVDs and videos will also be available for purchase.
The Frances Anderson Center is located at 700 Main St., Edmonds.
Dog mascot found, now calling cats
The Society for Cat Mascots is pleased to announce that Faces of the Northwest, a specialty gift shop located on the Edmonds waterfront, is having a contest to elect a cat mascot for the coming season.
Earlier this year, Faces of the Northwest held a similar contest for the area’s canine residents.
Beginning Nov. 1, cats or their owners must come into the store to post a 4 X 6 photograph along with a resume. For details about the contest, contact Faces of the Northwest at 425-771-2000.
Voting for the favorite cat mascot will begin Dec. 1. The cat with the most votes at the end of December wins a gift basket and has their picture posted in the store for the season. May the best cat win!
Annual Bingo event
at Meadowdale High
Meadowdale High’s Music Boosters Club is at it again.
The group’s annual Bingo fundraiser — an evening of pizza, pop, prizes and, of course, Bingo — is scheduled for 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 2, at the high school’s Great Hall.
Bingo packets are $6, and the public is encouraged to attend, club secretary Ellen Govan said in a press release.
The event benefits each of the music groups at Meadowdale, including the chorus, the orchestra and the band.
The boosters are hoping to purchase new equipment, new music and provide scholarships with the money.
While doors open at 6 p.m., games don’t begin until 6:30. Pizza, pop and raffle tickets are sold separately, but lots of prizes are available, according to the press release.
The high school is located at 6002 168th St. SW, Lynnwood.
‘Click It or Ticket’ police patrols are back
Following the success of the first-ever “Click it or Ticket” nighttime seat belt enforcement patrols in May 2007, law enforcement officers have again taken to the streets.
Increased patrols began Oct. 22 and will last until Nov. 5.
Officials with Washington State Patrol said that the death rates for drivers are four times higher at night than they are during the day.
“The goal of these nighttime patrols is to reduce the nighttime fatality rate by improving seat belt use. Data shows that a properly used seat belt can reduce the risk of serious injuries by 69 percent, and the risk of death by 45 percent,” said Lowell Porter, director of the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
Statewide, there will be approximately 50 law enforcement agencies participating in the nighttime seat belt enforcement.
Tickets cost $124. Police will ticket people who aren’t wearing seatbelts, but also people who are wearing them improperly, officials said.
During the May campaign, law enforcement officers cited 4,671 unbuckled drivers and passengers statewide, including more than 500 in Snohomish County.
