Gillian Braden-Armstrong and Nicole Bouche
Mountlake Terrace High School
The Mountlake Terrace duo defeated Shorecrest’s Francesca O’Malley and Daniella Brengelmann 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 to win the Sub-District 1 girls tennis doubles championship May 9 at Jackson High School. Braden-Armstrong and Bouche trailed 5-2 in the second set before winning five straight games to take the title. “We kind of had to regroup and figure out what we were doing wrong,” Braden-Armstrong said. “We said we’ve got to get back in it like we were in the first set.” Prior to sub-districts, Braden-Armstrong, a senior who was No. 2 singles during the regular season and Bouche, a freshman who was No. 1 singles, had played two doubles matches during the regular season, winning one and losing the other. The Mountlake Terrace doubles team did not lose a single set during the tournament.
Jordan Chase
Lynnwood High School
The junior standout won the pole vault at the Wesco 3A track and field championships May 9 at Shoreline Stadium. Chase cleared 12 feet and won a jump-off against two other competitors. Conditions during the finals were challenging. “Sometimes we had a tailwind. Sometimes a headwind. Sometimes it came on either side. It was very unpredictable,” Chase said.
