With all but one runner back, the Archbishop Thomas Murphy boys cross country team looks to be one of the deepest in recent memory.

Two-time state participant Steve Alkire returns for his senior season to lead the Wildcats. Alkire placed 16th at state last year.

“I actually have five runners that are going to do pretty good,” said Archbishop Murphy coach Don McClure. “Last year, we were three deep.”

Juniors Peter Sadowski and Ben Snyder are the No. 2 and No. 3 runners and should join Alkire to state.

“I’m hoping their experience will come through this year,” McClure said.

This is only the third year the Wildcats have had a cross country program and the numbers have slowly been increasing. This year the boys squad is up to 12 runners, while the girls team has nine runners.

The Wildcats’ top female runner is sophomore Kari Sandoval, who took 16th at the state meet.

“She had an excellent first year,” McClure said.

Junior Liz Kennedy and Emily McClure, the coach’s granddaughter, are first-year runners who have shown some promise.
