Six different players scored touchdowns to lead the Archbishop Thomas Murphy football team to its eighth straight victory of the season.
The Wildcats jumped on Coupeville early, scoring four unanswered touchdowns in the first quarter and adding four more over the next three quarters en route to a 55-14 victory Oct. 25 at Archbishop Murphy High School.
Backup running back Craig Duncan, who was filling in for starter Jevon Butler, rushed for 107 yards on five carries and scored a touchdown to lead the Wildcats.
“He’s done quite well when he’s got the chance,” Archbishop Murphy coach Terry Ennis said of Duncan.
Butler was making up some academic work earlier in the week and missed some practices as a result. He is expected to be back for tonight’s game against Friday Harbor.
The Wildcats (3-0 in the league, 8-0 overall) can clinch a playoff berth with a victory over the Wolverines.
“Friday Harbor has been one of the improved teams in the league,” Ennis said. “They play very hard … I know their field is apt not to be in good condition. There are a lot things we need to work through to get ready to play a good game.
“We’re treating this as another big game.”
The Coupeville Wolves (0-3, 1-6) presented Archbishop Murphy with a different challenge.
“I think that actually we went out and played well and I think that they respected the opponent,” Ennis said. “The opponent wasn’t a strong opponent. Sometimes there’s a tendency to not give your best effort if you think you’re not playing a good opponent. I thought the kids played well. I was satisfied with their effort.”
Running back Chris Hoerauf rushed for 90 yards on eight carries and scored two touchdowns. Teammate Ben Waiss added 70 yards on five carries and had two TDs.
