City prepares biennial budget

The city of Mill Creek is preparing to pass its biennial budget. The deadline for passing the budget it Dec. 31, 2002. Plans are for city manager Bob Stowe’s to present his budget proposal to the council in the last week of October. The council plans to adopt the budget in its last meeting of December.

Those interested in attending public hearings specifically for the budget can mark their November calendars. Public hearings for the biennial budget are scheduled for 6 p.m. Nov. 12 and Nov. 26 in council chambers at Mill Creek City Hall, 15728 Mill Creek Blvd. For more information, call the city at 425-745-1891. Lions club auction Oct. 19

The Mill Creek Lions Club Auction starts at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Martha Lake Community Club, 16300 Motor Place, Lynnwood, just off 164th, east of I-5. A silent auction and live auction. Light refreshments and soft drinks will be served. Admission is $10 per person, $15 per couple. A candidate’s reception sponsored by the Snohomish County Council on Aging is scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 22 at the Everett Transit Station, multipurpose room, 3201 Smith Street in Everett. Those who attend can learn about aging and long-term care services and hear first-hand what these services mean to the people who receive them. Candidates from throughout the Snohomish County area will be invited to mingle with voters. All will share food, thoughts and concerns.

The Snohomish County Council on Aging sponsors events for senior citizens and their family members, focusing on issues of concern to seniors. The group also sponsored a Medicare forum that was featured in the Mill Creek Enterprise on Sept. 20.

City employees honored

The City of Mill Creek’s Employee of the Year for 2002 is Christi Amrine, Associate Planner.

Officer of the Year for 2002 is Larry Davis, Administrative Sergeant.

Two other employees honored for their work were:

Tom Rogers, Planning Manager for 10 years of service at the City; and

Mike Reidt, Police Officer for 10 years of service at the City.Single parent monthly pot lucks

The Northshore YMCA’s Single Solution for Single Parents program offers support groups, family events and many more activities.

Those who are parenting on their own can take the break they deserve and join this program, designed as a great way to connect with other single-parent families.

The program offers monthly potlucks, the second Friday of each month, and is free to members and nonmembers. Other upcoming events are:

• Nov. 8: Turkey Bowling – dinner is on the Y

• Dec. 13: White Elephant Exchange

The city of Mill Creek seeks to fill several board vacancies including:

• Design review board, one vacancy; expires Aug 31, 2005, meets the third Thursday of each month at 5:15 p.m.. Board members need to be involved with architecture, landscape architecture, urban (design) planning or similar areas and don’t have to be residents.

• Planning commission, one vacancy, expires April 30, 2004, meets the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. You do not have to live in the city. The planning commission deals with land development and building usage.

• Art beautification board, six openings, terms expire Oct. 31, 2005, advises the city about designs, the city art fund, placement of artwork and construction projects.

• Parks and recreation board, two vacancies, terms expire Oct. 31, 2005, meets the first Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m., advises the city about parks and recreation.

• Board of appeals/adjustment, two vacancies, expires April 31, 2005, hears appeals related to building codes.

• Library board of trustees, one vacancy, expires Aug. 31, 2007, meets the first Monday of every other month at 7 p.m., advises the council about the library.

• Police advisory board, two vacancies, terms expire April 30, 2004, meets the second Thursday of each month at 5 p.m., work includes coordinating a biannual community satisfaction survey and administering the annual Officer of the Year program.

The second annual “Strut Your Mutt Pup Parade” is from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19. The parade will begin in the Baskin &Robbins parking lot in Maple Leaf Square. Pet owners and their dogs are invited to take part in the parade, which will be about a third of last year’s route.

Parade preregistration is $25 – the first 100 to register will receive a special gift from Rescue Pup. Same-day registration is $35.
