Write On Calligraphers hosts its 24th annual Letters of Joy festival for calligraphers and paper artists May 5 and 6.

The two-day mini-conference features a wide range of classes for all levels of paper arts enthusiasts. A lecture, vendors, and exhibits are included, and open to the public without registering for classes. Vendors offer many unique books and paper art related items.

The keynote speaker will be Julian Waters, a world-renowned lettering artist and font designer. His clients include the Postal Service and National Geographic Magazine, and his work has graced covers and pages of a multitude of books and magazines. Over the last 30 years Julian has taught and lectured in North America, Europe and Asia. He will be teaching a 2-day workshop following the festival.

Edmonds based Write on Calligraphers was founded in 1978 by artists who share a love of letters and paper arts. The conference and accompanying exhibits are dedicated to the memory of Kathleen Joy O’Brien, whose passion for letters helped to establish a large calligraphic community in Edmonds and the Puget Sound Area.

Regular meetings of the non-profit group offer special presentations of interest to calligraphers and paper enthusiasts. The meetings take place in Edmonds usually the second Tuesday evening of January, March, May, September and November. Meetings are open to the public at no charge. The group also sponsors workshops conducted by renowned calligraphers and paper artists throughout the year.

WOC members also gain advance information on upcoming events of interest to calligraphers and paper art enthusiasts. They have access to an extensive library collection containing over 275 select books, tapes, and slides, and periodicals related to the paper arts.

The Letters of Joy Festival takes place from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, May 5 and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 6 at Edmonds Community College, located at 20000 68th Ave. W. in Lynnwood.
