Monday officially kicked off this year’s fall election cycle, with candidate filing beginning for more than 330 county and local offices.
To appear on the ballot, all candidates must file a declaration of candidacy online, in person or by mail no later than 4:30 p.m. Friday, June 5. Mail-in filings must include a notarized declaration of candidacy and the appropriate filing fee.
Secure online filing is available 24 hours a day, ending at 4 p.m. Friday.
Candidate filings will be posted online at noon and by 6 p.m.
Filing fees are non-refundable. The last day to withdraw a candidate filing is 4:30 p.m. Thursday, June 11. Withdrawals must be received in writing.

Shoreline dance students give recital
The city’s sixth annual Dance Recital will be held on Saturday, June 6, at the Shoreline Center Auditorium.
The recital highlights dancers who took winter- and spring-quarter classes through the City of Shoreline Parks, Recreation &Cultural Services Department, including pre-ballet, eNergi, Youth Dance Moves, tap, modern and Irish step dance classes.
Over 160 dancers of all ages will perform. Due to the size of the program, classes have been divided into two recitals of approximately 80 dances each. The recitals will take place at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Admission is free. The Shoreline Center Auditorium is located at 18560 1st Ave. NE, Shoreline.

Camps offer kids swimming, fun
The City of Shoreline Parks, Recreation &Cultural Services Department has a wide range of programs for children and teens who are looking for something to do this summer.
Camp Shoreline at Spartan Recreation Center features sports, arts, special events and daily swimming at the Shoreline Pool. The camp is divided into age groups with a special program for campers under the age of 7.
Meridian Park Elementary School is the site of another Camp Shoreline. Thanks to the Shoreline School District, the camp is held in various classrooms and gym space. This program is open to campers from age 4 to sixth grade and runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Shoreline Pool will be holding swim lessons throughout the summer for all ages. The Gater Swim Team practices various times throughout the week and competes with other swim teams in the area. Open swims also are a great way to enjoy a hot summer day.

Class trains teens to be counselors
The City of Shoreline Parks, Recreation &Cultural Services Department have openings in the 2009 CIT camp.
The Counselor in Training program was designed to provide leadership skills and experience working with day campers. The program is open to teens ages 13 to 15. CITs will work alongside Camp Shoreline leaders and assist with arts and crafts, games, special events and sports activities. On Thursdays, CITs also will take a field trip to various locations around the Seattle area.
The programs meet Mondays through Thursdays, July 6 to July 16 or July 20 to July 30. Camp is from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and meets at the Spartan Recreation Center.

Bayou Festival to benefit Parkview
Parkview Services in Shoreline will host an inaugural Seattle Bayou Festival in support of their programs on Aug. 1 at Magnuson Park in Seattle.
The 40-year-old nonprofit provides housing and housing assistance to low-income individuals and families with disabilities.
BayouFest is the first of two new major fundraising events for Parkview. The Southern-flavored festival will feature jazz, blues, funk and folk music, including the David Grisman Quintet, The Chris Thomas King Band and The Wild Magnolias. The festival will also feature the Voodoo Beer and Wine Garden with over 60 selections.
BayouFest will introduce the annual Cajun Cook-Off that will feature competitors from restaurants, neighborhoods, families and other collaborations from across the country.

Stock the Pantry for NW Harvest
Bartell Drugs and Fisher Communications launched the Stock the Pantry food drive Monday and will continue accepting nonperishable food donations for Northwest Harvest at all 55 Bartell Drugs locations in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties until June 14.
The two-week food drive will help Northwest Harvest replenish food stocks for the summer months, when families that normally depend on free or reduced-price school meals may struggle to provide those meals at home.
Kid-friendly food suggestions include canned tuna, single-serving applesauce and canned fruit, instant oatmeal, cereal, whole-grain bars, cheese crackers, peanut butter, shelf-stable milk, boxed macaroni and cheese and other pastas.
