Claim refund money
The state Department of Revenue has more than $750 million in unclaimed property refunds available. Close to 3 million names – including those of familiar public figures and business leaders – are on unclaimed property lists available at www.claimyourcash.org.
Once a year businesses are required to report to the state any unclaimed property held for at least three years. It can include paychecks, utility deposits, bank accounts, retailer refunds, equities, securities and lost property.
The Unclaimed Property division surpassed $400 million in unclaimed property refunds issued since 1955. For fiscal year 2010, which ended June 30, the Department processed 98,362 claims and refunded more than $44.5 million.
In 55 years, the Unclaimed Property division has collected more than $1.1 billion. As of Aug. 1, approximately $417 million had been refunded.
Fiscal year 2010 claims increased from 2009 when more than 88,000 claims were processed in refunding $45 million. In fiscal year 2008, about 75,000 claims were paid worth $38.7 million.
Cut water heating costs
PUD customers using an electric water heater for home, pool or hot tub can slash utility costs in half with PUD’s Solar Express program. Install a solar hot water system to supplement an existing system to preheat water going into the water heater and reduce the amount of electricity the water heater consumes by 50 percent or more.
The program offers financial incentives for qualifying residential and commercial systems. Customers can receive a cash incentive of $500 for each installed system. Residential customers may opt for a 2.9 percent APR loan of up to $14,000 to finance the installation instead of the cash incentive.
For complete system and customer qualifications, call 425-783-1700 or visit www.snopud.com/solarexpress.
A federal tax credit of 30 percent is available on the purchase and installation cost of solar electric and solar hot water systems. Installations must meet certain criteria to be eligible. Visit www.dsireusa.org for more information.
