EDMONDS – Hundreds of tennis balls are scheduled to race down Seventh Avenue in Edmonds on Saturday as part of “Everyone Gets to Play,” an all-day series of events for the Sno-King Youth Club.
The “Running of the Balls” is scheduled to roll at noon at the intersection of Seventh and Main streets in downtown Edmonds. Starting at 11:15 a.m., participants can buy tennis balls for $5 each, then decorate them for the race down the hill. The first 15 balls across the line will win prizes, according to Ryan Flynn, development director for the club.
Sno-King Youth Club sponsors soccer, basketball, softball and baseball teams and leagues for children.
“Everyone Gets to Play” has been the club motto for more than 30 years, according to officials. “I’m a competitive guy, but I’ve learned how vital it is for children of all levels to stay with a group of friends and play, not be discarded or sit on the bench all season because they’re not the star player,” Flynn said.
The tennis-ball race has its origins as a fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Edmonds, which is one of many community partners in “Everybody Gets to Play Day.”
Other events planned for Saturday include:
• 8 a.m. – A 5-kilometer run, starting at Civic Center Field, Edmonds.
• 9 a.m. – Children’s Fun Run at Frances E. Anderson Field.
• All day – Sports mini-clinics, dozens of activity and food booths, informational displays, Healthy Body Fair with children’s musician Paul Lippert. Frances E. Anderson Field and Seventh and Main streets
