Memorial Day
poppies for sale
Members of The American Legion Auxiliary Unit #66 will be in downtown Edmonds Saturday, May 29, distributing Memorial Day poppies and giving the community the opportunity to make a small donation.
The event pays tribute to those veterans who have died in the past 80 years, and honors others who have served their country. All proceeds from contributions remain in this area to benefit veterans and their families.
Each poppy is made by a disabled veteran in auxiliary-sponsored poppy shops with materials supplied by the auxiliary. The veteran is paid a small amount for each flower. For some it is their only income.
The poppy program has been part of the American Legion Auxiliary for more than 75 years. It has been estimated that 25 million Americans will wear a poppy to honor veterans and America’s war dead, contributing more than $2 million for rehabilitation and welfare programs.
Mayor Gary Haakenson has proclaimed May 29 as Poppy Day in Edmonds.
