Contests

The Evergreen State Fair and Snohomish County’s Economic Development Division are sponsoring the first-ever wine competition for commercial and amateur winemakers from Western Washington with grapes grown and processed in Western Washington.

Judges will award medals to the best wines in the commercial and amateur categories. The competition’s intent is to recognize and promote the achievement of western Washington produced wines.

“This is an opportunity to showcase an ever-growing niche market in our local agricultural industry,” said Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon. “Each year at the Evergreen State Fair, we highlight the region’s farming history but also new trends such as grape growing and winemaking.”

All wines must be made 100 percent from grapes grown, processed and produced in Western Washington. Fermenting (or processing) of skins (or pomace) from Eastern Washington grapes is not allowed.

Judging will be held Aug. 17 at Russell’s in Bothell with the awards ceremony to be held Sept. 5 during the fair. For amateur winemakers considering a commercial operation, the contest is an opportunity to gather input and recommendations from a professional panel of judges. Winners will be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals. Best-of-show winners also will be selected.
