Brier voters have elected Catie Corpron-Smith to fill seat 6 on the City Council in the only contested race in Brier for the general election.

Results from the Nov. 4 general election show Smith leading her opponent Pamela Lupo with 57.99 percent of the votes. Lupo’s votes totaled 41.47 percent.

Smith, a political newcomer, filed to run during the extended filing period, along with Pamela Lupo, after no one stepped forward to fill seat 6. Neither woman realized someone else had filed until after they had done so.

Smith said her win is likely a result of the time she spent campaigning and the fact that she made a lot of contacts in Brier.

“I think I was just out there a little bit more,” said Smith. “I spent the time walking the streets and ringing the doorbells.”

Smith said voters are ready for some new blood and want someone who thinks independently. She added that she has the perspective of someone who has raised her family in Brier. Once in office, Smith said her first priority is to make sure the city council, and the new mayor, are settled.

“The first thing is to go in there and make sure things get settled back into place,” Smith said.

Lupo said was not surprised to find that her challenger was in the lead, and attributes this fact to her own lack of campaigning. She said Smith really wanted the position and worked hard for it.

“She has worked very hard and I think she will make a great councilperson,” Lupo said.

Gary Morgan, Gary Starks and L. Edward McClenny, Jr. were unopposed in their bids for spots on the council.
