The Mill Creek City Council and police department paid tribute to police department Sgt. Larry Davis at Tuesday’s meeting, presenting members of Davis’ family with the late sergeant’s uniform, badge and a portrait drawn by Sherry Bruski, the wife of officer Tom Bruski.
Two of Davis’ brothers and one of his sisters was in attendance at Tuesday’s meeting and received the gifts from police chief Bob Crannell and officers Tom Bruski and Mike Reidt. Davis, a 15-year department veteran, died of malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer, on Nov. 30.
“Larry was a true public servant,” Mayor Terry Ryan said. “He always put other people first.”
As an example, Ryan offered a story about how he went to check out a citizen’s complaint on Christmas Day one year. When he arrived in the neighborhood where the problem was, Davis was already there in his patrol car. Ryan asked Davis why he was working on Christmas Day when he had seniority and Davis responded that he was working so younger officers could spend time with their families.
Council member Mark Bond, a former Mill Creek police officer, said Davis “touched people and made a difference in the world.”
“We should all take a lesson from Larry in how to face adversity with such a positive attitude,” said Mayor Pro-tem Donna Michelson. “It was incredible to be around someone like that.”
Davis is the first city employee to have the flag outside city hall lowered to half-mast in his or her honor.
“That shows you how respected he was,” Council member Dale Hensley said.
