King’s didn’t get the opening tip against Chimacum in the opening round of the bi-district playoffs Feb. 21, but when your team responds with 24 unanswered points that’s okay.
Chimacum scored the first point of the game on a free throw by Kylie Garing but after a few missed shots King’s got rolling.
Senior forward Sarah Strand scored 13 of her game-high 14 points during the 24-0 run.
King’s took a 26-point lead at the half and went on to win 61-33.
The Cowboys struggled to move the ball around on offense with the Knights in their faces, forcing turnovers. King’s Bianca Rowland, who scored 11 points off the bench, stole the ball four times to lead the Knights.
Still, King’s head coach Eric Rasmussen said he’s seen his team play tougher defense.
“We seem a step slow defensively, reacting instead of anticipating,” he said.
Neither team shot well from the field. King’s made only 23 of 74 shots for 31 percent while Chimacum made 13 of 58 shots for 22 percent.
The Knights scored many of their points in transition off turnovers, but misfired from the field all night. King’s made only one of 16 3-point attempts.
“We’ve got to play better than we played today. We got to be ready to shoot it first of all and get in a rhythm,” Rasmussen said. “It didn’t feel like we got in a good rhythm tonight.”
The Knights crashed the boards, outrebounding Chimacum 65-42. That was a vast improvement over the effort in a district playoff loss to Lynden Christian in which King’s got outrebounded 42-22.
Jordan Irish came off the bench to grab 10 boards, Strand pulled down nine and Clauson had eight.
Jaime Friedrich, Angie Morgansen and Jucynda Ajax each scored six points apiece to lead the Cowboys.
