EDMONDS — The U.S. Postal Service intends to move out of its current Main Street post office and into more appropriate smaller digs, a representative told City Council members at their July 27 meeting.
The existing post office, at 201 Main St. in downtown Edmonds, is 8,000 square feet. The Postal Service projects it needs only 4,100 square feet to provide all the retail-oriented services currently available at the Main Street post office. Letter carriers, previously located out of the Main Street facility, have already been relocated to the Perrinville post office location.
The Postal Service will advertise its space requirements and provide a list to council for its input. A site selection process will include giving council 30 days to comment on the Postal Service’s intended direction.
A new location could be picked within four months.
Postal Service officials say they prefer to remain downtown. The post office currently is in a leased space. The property was recently sold and the new owner, Douglas Spee, intends to redevelop the land. There is a possibility that there will be space for the post office within the redeveloped location.
