Everett Community College wants to build an Education Center for Health Professions that would more than double the number of students studying health care within 10 years.

EvCC will need the help of area health care providers to make it work. The college will be measuring community support over the next few months.

“I think it’s a very ambitious business proposal, and that is played off against a very serious shortage of health care professionals,” said Stu Barger, the EvCC dean of instruction.

The college hopes local health care providers will help financially and with building space with the expectation they will be able to hire the majority of graduates.

The college’s health care program has 261 students in a range of programs from phlebotomy (drawing blood) to registered nurses. It has a $1.03 million budget and occupies 14,000 square feet with 15 faculty in three buildings.

“In 10 years,” a college report concludes, “we believe we could have a profile of 680 students in an expanded range of programs to include radiology technician, surgery assistant and ultrasound technician (programs) that would occupy 40,000 square feet of space.”

The expansion would require 27 faculty and a budget of $2.8 million along with the extra building space. Community and workforce needs would dictate programs the college would add.
