Seven legislators – all Democrats – from the 1st, 21st and 32nd legislative districts plan to run for re-election this year, but, three weeks before the filing period, only two have announced opponents.
State Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe has an opponent in the 1st District, independent Guy Palumbo, while 1st District Rep. Derek Stanford also has an opponent, Republican Brian Travis.
However, 1st District Rep. Luis Moscoso, 21st District Reps. Marko Liias and Mary Helen Roberts, and 32nd District Reps. Ruth Kagi and Cindy Ryu have no announced opponents.
Most will get opponents. In the 2010 election, all eight legislators elected in the three districts had opponents and seven had competitive primaries.
Republicans have promised to find opponents for some of the Democratic incumbent legislators.
The 1st Legislative District includes Brier, most of Mountlake Terrace, Bothell, part of Kirkland, unincorporated areas of Snohomish County north and east of Bothell, and unincorporated areas of King County between Bothell and Kirkland.
The 21st District includes most of Edmonds, unincorporated areas north of Edmonds and Lynnwood, north Lynnwood, Mukilteo and part of south Everett.
The 32nd District includes Lynnwood, Woodway, south Edmonds, unincorporated areas of southwest Snohomish County, Shoreline and part of northwest Seattle
Candidates file May 14-18 for positions on the August primary ballot.
