Considering Michelangelo’s Cafe is only a sidewalk away from bustling Aurora Avenue, you wouldn’t think it could offer a quiet retreat from the noise and ever-present traffic. But with cozy couches, organic coffee and heart-warming soups, it does just that.
With a menu seemingly based on the “quality, not quantity” motto, Michelangelo’s offers salads, soups and sandwiches. To spice things up, they also offer combinations of the latter.
For dessert or those in need of a caffeine jolt, Michelangelo’s serves Kalani organic coffee as well as the usual espresso fare: lattes, mochas, flavored drinks, teas and baked goods. If you are in a hurry, customers can call ahead their order so it’s ready when they get there. And there’s no need to get out of the car – Michelangelo’s has a pick-up window specifically for that purpose.
Just about everything on the menu has a healthy twist; most things are made from organic ingredients, such as the seasonal salad, butternut squash, broccoli and creamy tomato soups. The soups, owner Noel Carvalho explained, are also low fat, low sugar and non-dairy.
For those who are not drawn to the health-nut side of food, the curry chicken sandwich and Caesar salad may be more kind to your palate. The curry chicken-deemed as “a Michelangelo’s original-has a sweet side to it with the addition of apples and dried cranberries.”
From 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, local artists gather at the cafe for an open-mike night of bluegrass music. Anyone is invited to join in, and spectators are always welcome, Carvalho said.
While many of the items on the menu are organic and special-made, the prices don’t reflect the extra effort. Meals start at $4.25, and coffee drinks are around $3.
