National Healthy Kids Day

Every spring, the Dale Turner Family YMCA invites kids and families from the community to participate in Healthy Kids Day, a national event to promote youth health and wellness. This year’s event, on Saturday, April 18, will feature live performances, local community vendors, a Jr. Olympic skills competition, crafts, prizes, and games for all ages, plus health and wellness resources for families.

Experts say school-age kids should engage in physical activities for at least one hour every day to be healthy. Studies show that almost two-thirds of our nation’s youth are not getting the suggested amount of physical activity for good health. More than nine million children in the United States are either obese or overweight.

Healthy Kids Day will take place at Dale Turner Family YMCA from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 18 and is free to the public. The first 100 kids will receive a free t-shirt. In honor of Healthy Kids Day, new membership fees will be waved from Apri1 17-19.

End Summer Hunger

Hopelink, the largest social services agency serving East and North King County, will launch its annual “End Summer Hunger” fund and food drive in April.

Families made 23 percent more visits to Hopelink’s food banks between September and December 2008 than the same period in 2007. The proceeds from End Summer Hunger will stock Hopelink’s six food banks for the high-demand summer months when subsidized meal programs at schools are not available and parents need more food to fill their children’s stomachs. The proceeds also support Hopelink’s homelessness prevention programs for families. In 2008, the End Summer Hunger campaign raised more than $119,000 in monetary and food donations.

The End Summer Hunger campaign begins April 1 and ends Aug. 31, and seeks support from schools, individuals, businesses and organizations.

Expedia is the presenting sponsor for End Summer Hunger 2009. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, contact Eric Thom at ethom@hope-link.org or 425.558.5910.
