EDMONDS — The new school year is fast approaching. The doors of the schools in the Edmonds School District open to students on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

For families of new students, whether a kindergarten age child entering school for the first time or the children of a family new to the district, the large amount of paperwork and tasks such as getting the required immunizations can be daunting and time consuming.

Listed below are answers to common questions concerning the opening of school.

Which school is ours? If you are unsure as to which school your child is assigned or have other questions about the schools, contact the office at your nearest school building or the Edmonds School District office at 425-670-7000.

How do we enroll? Enrollment is on a continuing basis at each school building. Contact the school by telephone to find out the operating hours during the summer break. If the school is closed, that information should be on the voicemail that will answer the phone.

What do we need to do to enroll? The No. 1 priority is to have an up-to-date immunization record for each child. State law mandates specific immunizations at various grade levels for each child. Without those vaccinations, or a waiver, a student cannot be admitted to school.

Additionally, proof of residency, such as a utility bill, is required.

Parents will also need to supply a birth certificate and contact information such as work and home telephone numbers.

Students transferring into the district will need to bring a withdrawal form from their last school or most recent report card as well as contact information for the last school attended.

How do we get our children to school? An extensive school bus system moves 9,000 students per day in the 33 square mile district. Students who were registered for school by Aug. 9 will shortly be receiving a bus information card in the mail detailing the location of the appropriate bus stop and schedule.

Students registering later than Aug. 9 should contact the district transportation office at 425-670-7230 to obtain transportation information.
