Snohomish County Fire District 7, which serves Mill Creek and most areas of unincorporated Snohomish County surrounding the city, received a federal grant to purchase new equipment last week.

Federal Emergency Management Agency Regional Director John Pennington presented the district with the $208,944 grant during the district’s fire commissioner’s meeting June 12.

The grant will fund the purchase of 60 new Self Contained Breathing Apparatus units, plus additional masks and spare bottles. The department applied for the grant in March.

“Our old inventory includes two separate styles of SCBA equipment, neither or which meets current requirements,” District 7 Chief Rick Eastman said. “Fire safety requires clear and reliable communication, and the new equipment includes built-in self-activating communicators.”

The grant was part of the FEMA Assistance to Fire Fighters Program, which is aimed at helping local fire departments improve fire fighting operations, improve health and safety programs, purchase new equipment, and fund fire prevention and safety programs.
