Japanese students Adopt-A-Stream
Twenty-seven high school students and three chaperones from Iwakuni and Ishinomaki, Japan, are participating in a two-week cultural exchange conducted by Everett Community College’s Nippon Business Institute or NBI.
The students are staying with host families in the Everett area and are keeping busy with their English as a second language classes, site seeing and stream keeping with the folks at the Northwest Stream Center.
“Students in Japan are becoming very aware of the environment, however, they are not as aware of how volunteers in the U.S. take actions to protect local streams. NBI program coordinator Kathy Koss said. “We asked the Adopt-A-Stream Foundation to provide this group with a short course on stream ecology and provide them a volunteer opportunity.”
The students visited the stream center at McCollum Park on Tuesday, July 22, and learned about watersheds and wetland ecology.
They planted 15 cedar trees along North Creek.
