Several projects for which U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee, D-Bainbridge, requested funding were approved and signed into law Feb. 20.

• Restoration of Puget Sound and adjacent waters received $500,000. This funding will allow the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to begin a habitat restoration program throughout the Puget Sound basin. Congress authorized Inslee’s initiative last as one of only a few new programs included in the Water Resources Development Act. The initiative is structured to ensure that projects are done in close consultation with local, state, federal, and tribal interests, and the focus is to undertake large-scale restoration work on the mainstream rivers, estuaries, and marine waters.

• Snohomish County’s Community Transit received $3 million. More than 4,300 cars park in the county’s lots each day, and at least eight lots regularly exceed capacity, according to Inslee’s office. A recent state Department of Transportation study concluded that Snohomish County will need an additional 5,200 commuter stalls by 2015.

• The Northeast Vocational Area Cooperative (NEVAC) received $250,000. This funding was requested to help the educational consortium introduce Internet technology courses to middle schools and to increase the breadth of such courses offered in high schools.

• The Puget Sound Center’s “Teaching + Technology Coaching Initiative” received $250,000. This program, which helps the Shoreline, Edmonds, Seattle and Mukilteo school districts, fosters the integration of technology into classrooms by training teachers in technology skills and instructional strategies to integrate technology into teaching and learning. Teachers also become coaches for other teachers in their schools .
