Although it wasn’t his last words or actions as Mill Creek’s interim city manager, Mike Caldwell thanked the City Council and city staff for a good tenure during his last report to the Council on June 28.
Caldwell served the city on an interim basis for six months after longtime manager Bob Stowe accepted the same position with Bothell and before Steve Nolen took the city’s reins on July 5. Caldwell came to Mill Creek through the services of Seattle-based recruiting firm Prothman Company.
“It’s always kind of a humbling experience to be appointed to such a position,” Caldwell said June 28. “This has been one of my best assignments. I’ve had a lot of neat opportunities come my way.”
Those opportunities included working through the city’s proposed annexation of 553 acres, purchasing the Huntron Building, and helping make the household hazardous waste disposal event take place. Caldwell also attended the Boundary Review Board’s public hearing on the annexation and testified before the Snohomish County Council when that body voted to contest the proposed boundaries.
“It’s been my good fortune to be here during a time when we had a chance to get things done,” Caldwell said.
Caldwell cited a pair of issues that weren’t resolved during his tenure: A franchise agreement with Comcast Communications, and a salary survey of city employees to ensure salaries are competitive with similar-sized cities in the Northwest.
Caldwell returned to Tucson, Ariz., where he is retired, at the end of last week.
