EVERETT — A trio of Jackson swimmers created some significant ripples at last week’s Western Conference 4A South Sectional Championships.
Brothers Peter and Andrew Mullins and Josiah Pleasant helped lead the Timberwolves to a third place finish at the seven-team competition that wrapped up Feb. 15 at Kamiak High School.
Peter Mullins took first place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a state qualifying time of 1:01.86. Andrew was second with a 1:02.53. Peter finished third in the 200 individual medley with a state time of 2:01.12.
“Peter’s 200 IM was exceptional,” said Jackson coach Drew Whorley. “It was his best time by a couple of seconds.”
Andrew took second place in the 200 freestyle with a state time of 1:53.58.
The Mullins brothers push each other hard and at the same time are very supportive of one another, according to Whorley.
“They’re each other’s biggest fans,” he said. “It really doesn’t matter who wins the race. They’re always excited for the other person. It’s a pretty amazing relationship.”
Pleasant finished first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.48 and is headed to state in the event. He also placed third in the 100 backstroke.
The 200 medley relay team of Peter and Andrew Mullins, Pleasant and Chris Tracy took second place with a state time of 1:44.53.
“The 200 medley relay team was as fast as we’ve been this year,” Whorley said.
The Mullins brothers and Pleasant all have a good shot at scoring points at this week’s Class 4A state swimming and diving championships, Whorley said.
The other Jackson participants at the sectional meet had strong showings, especially at the preliminaries on Feb. 13
“Thursday was one of the best overall team performances we’ve had at districts,” Whorley said.
Because of its numbers, the Wolfpack skipped the junior varsity championships and brought the entire squad to sectionals.
“Everyone had the opportunity to compete here and the kids really came together,” Whorley said. “They swam exceptionally on Thursday. We did a really good job to get a lot of the kids here.”
Jackson’s other top finishers included Cory Bensen (sixth in the 200 freestyle, seventh in the 500 freestyle), Kyle Logan (12th in the 200 individual medley), Tracy (third in the 50 freestyle, fourth in the 100 freestyle), Hector Pang (seventh in diving) and Ben Ramos (fourth in the 100 butterfly). The 200 freestyle relay team took fourth and the 400 freestyle relay team was third.
Kamiak took the team title, edging Shorewood 319 points to 295. Jackson scored 222 points and was followed by Edmonds-Woodway (165), Mountlake Terrace (106), Mariner (83.50) and Everett (75.5.)
