MILL CREEK — Jackson’s Katie Sieck and Krystal Osborne ran into a doubles team on a hot streak in the finals of the Western Conference South Division championships on May 12.
Shorewood’s Jordan Reni and Samantha Lim, both seniors, defeated Sieck and Osborne, 6-4, 6-1, to finish the tournament without losing a set. They earned the Wesco South’s top seed at the District 1 tournament at Stanwood which began May 18 and continues today (Friday, May 19) and tomorrow (Saturday, May 20).
Sieck and Osborne entered the district tournament as the No. 2 seed from the South.
Up 5-4 in the first set and facing deuce against Sieck and Osborne, who had rallied from a 5-2 deficit, Lim and Reni buckled down. They scored some tough points, took the set and regained momentum.
Then, Lim and Reni cruised through the second set.
“In the second set we wanted to get that aggressiveness back and go all the way,” Lim said.
Osborne called Lim and Reni the toughest doubles team they’ve played in high school.
“Hopefully we’ll be able to play them in districts (again),” Osborne said.
“I think we learned a lot from playing them,” Sieck added.
Sieck and Osborne beat Edmonds-Woodway’s Ikue Maeda and Esther Ham, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 in the semifinals to set up the meeting with Lim and Reni.
Jackson singles player Linda Cung also punched her ticket to the district tournament with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Edmonds-Woodway’s Erika Korpi in the consolation bracket. Shorewood’s Kari Fiske beat Cung, 6-4, 6-0 to earn the third seed from the South. Cung qualified as the fourth seed.
“I’m thrilled,” Jackson coach Judi Montgomery said. “The girls have played really well.”
